I study both mass and elite political behavior with a substantive focus on issues of electoral competition, representation, and public policy—in particular, campaign finance law and health policy.
Small Power
My most recent book project, Small Power: How Local Parties Shape Elections (with David Doherty and Michael G. Miller, Oxford University Press, 2022), examines the role of local party organizations in elections in the United States. Using a combination of survey, experimental, and qualitative (in-person interviews with nearly 30 local party chairs) data, the manuscript establishes that local party chairs can affect representation, polarization, and competition in various ways.
